INSTALLMENT 14
Golden Chance Real Estate- One week after the benefit
The atmosphere is very low-key and quiet as Gillian Richardson enters
the office with her Starbucks coffee in one hand and her cell in the other.
For the last few days, she has been busy trying to get two closings to go
through while working at Macy’s during the weekend. As she sits down in
her desk, she is caught off guard by an e-mail from her boss asking see
her.
As she enters the darkly painted office which houses her boss Bianca
Lewiston, she keeps thinking what she could have done. As she stares at
Bianca, she couldn’t get over how beautiful and confident she was, in fact,
her boss reminded her of a Halle Berry type.
“You wanted to see me Bianca?” Gillian sits down in the chair across
from Bianca.
“Yes, I was wondering if you would be interested in meeting with a
potential client for lunch next week.”
“Sure but why aren’t you jumping to snag this deal for yourself?” Gillian
wonders to her self why her boss is so willing to give up a potential client.
“Because apparently you met the client’s father at the benefit you were
at last Friday. I figure you would have a better shot of snagging his
business. If you don’t think you are up to the challenge I’ll meet with Mr.
Falmont myself.”
“Are you talking about George Falmont?” Bianca shakes her head. “Oh,
his son Jonathan, I wonder why he would be interested in our business.”
“Well, considering that he has been shopping around at different real
estate companies for a couple of weeks, I would think that would answer
your question. In fact, he was the person I was telling you about who was
interested briefly in using us. I don’t know why he is interested again but
we are going to pounce this time. I have decided since you met and
interacted with the Falmonts, that you could reel them in.”
“I’ll meet with Jonathan Falmont for lunch. I am just curious about why
we have to dine him when I could just be showing him some properties
nearby.” She thought to herself how unusual it was to woo him like he is
a business client. “However, if he wants to be wooed, I will be more then
happy to get him as a client.”
“Good, I will be calling Mr. Falmont to arrange a date for you two to
meet.” Bianca reaches for the phone. “You can get back to work now
Ms. Richardson, I’ll let you know the date and time.”
Gillian leaves Bianca’s office realizing she hasn’t really met the Falmonts
other then just running into George Falmont. However, she wasn’t about
to let Bianca know that in fear of losing a commission.
Hope Falls Chronicle
“Richardson, get in here!” Malcolm Gladstone bellows from his office,
which startles everyone.
Lillian slowly creeps into his office wondering she is being called into his
office. She is racking her brain wondering what she possibly did to incite
her boss’s wrath. However, she can’t think of a single thing but figures
she’ll hear about something she did.
“You wanted to see me?” Lillian asks as she closes the door to his office.
“Yes, I just finished reading your piece on the charity benefit last Friday.
Interesting read, but it just doesn’t seem like you really put much effort
into this piece. Is there something you aren’t telling me?”
“No, I decided to write the feature as more of a society feature. I mean
anyone who was anyone was at the function last Friday so I wrote it as
such.”
“Well I will be publishing this feature in Friday’s Edition. Next time you
need to put more effort into your pieces. I have sources there that stated
you took off right around the time that the event officially started. Why is
that Richardson?” Malcolm interested in hearing her answer.
“I figured I saw everything I needed to see and I always go with my
instincts Sir.” Not bothering to tell him that her instincts were screaming
at her to run like hell.
“Hmmm, go back to work Richardson. I don’t expect to be seeing this
kind of writing from you in the future. You may go.” Malcolm growls.
Lillian settles back at her desk to start writing her first personal column
for the paper. Just then her phone starts ringing loudly while quickly picking
it up. She instantly knows she should not have answered the phone when
she realizes who is on the other end.
“Lillian my dear, I just had to call you! I needed to find out how you have
been since the charity function last Friday! I was a tad disappointed that
you slipped out so quickly before hearing my speech. Then I remembered
that you do have that ability to disappoint those you are friends with.”
Lenore states.
“I am sorry for leaving so early but something had come up. I do
apologize again for leaving so early.”
“Don’t you worry about that my dear old friend, I will make sure you
make it up to me and I have the best solution. Come to the country club
for lunch, my treat.” Lenore suggests over the telephone. “Now I won’t
take no for answer, because I believe you and I have some unfinished
business to discuss. So will two work for you?”
“Um, ok that will work. I guess I will see you at two.”
Foxy’s Diner:
Nina Richardson is busily reading a book between classes when she
notices her friend Katie coming into the diner. She instantly knows she has
been spotted and braces herself for some questions.
“Nina, just the person I was looking for. I hope I haven’t caught you at a
bad time but I haven’t really seen you this past week.” Katie sits down
across from her friend. Part of her felt bad about trying to set up her
brother with Nina but figured no harm done.
“Well, I am reading a book right now and just enjoying the fact that it is
Friday. However, I think you are more interested in what I did last Friday.
Am I right?”
“You are correct. I really didn’t think it was a big deal inviting you over to
hang out with my brother. I mean you guys have known each other for
years, I didn’t think there was any harm.”
“It wasn’t a horrible time but you led me to believe that he was
interested in me and vice versa. In fact, we even kissed each other and
couldn’t help but laugh. We ended up deciding to just be friends. I’m not
mad at all. I am glad that he is my friend and only my friend.”
“I kind of felt bad doing that but I thought you would be perfect for each
other. I guess matchmaking is not my forte!” Nina notices the college
catalog in Katie’s arms. “Yeah, I’m trying to figure out what I want to do
when I finish college. I don’t have the foggiest idea.”
“I felt the same way until I decided to major in journalism. I think the key
is trying to decide what you love to do and picking a major that fits. For
instance, I have an ability to read people very well and I think that is a key
component for journalism. You have a lot of interests, you just have to
relax and think about it.”
“I’ll believe you since you always seem to know what you want. Are you
sure you aren’t mad about me trying to set you and Wally up?” Nina shakes
her head at the question while giving a look indicating that she would be
mad if asked again. “Anyway, I have a history class in ten minutes that I
have to race to, I’ll talk to you later. You also have to meet my boyfriend
this weekend.”
“Yeah, I hear your sister refused to serve him alcohol at the country club.
I mean how does one recover from that first impression?”
Katie laughs as she exits the while Nina settles back down in her seat to
continue reading her novel.
Hope Falls University: Student Resource Center
Wally Mitchell makes his way into the resource center awaiting his
appointment with the tutor. Until he intercepted his progress reports, he
hadn’t any idea that he was struggling with his classes. Instantly he knew
a tutor was needed or else risk failing the semester and never hearing the
end of it from Melinda or Katie.
“Wally Mitchell?” His tutor calls while Wally instantly races to meet his
tutor. “I value a person who makes his appointments on time.”
“Well I need help in all of my subjects.” Wally states as he was led by
the tutor to a private room. “This semester I seem to be having trouble
concentrating.”
“Has anything changed this semester? I have found that sometimes any
major changes can cause a student to lose concentration. Perhaps talking
about it makes will make you feel better.”
“No, nothing has changed at all. Everything is just the same, I guess the
classes this semester are harder then I thought. Maybe I am not happy
with the major I have chosen.”
“Well, you are only a sophomore so if you feel that way, you have plenty
of time to change majors.” The tutor looks over his file. “Chemistry is
certainly a very difficult major. Only you can decide what is right for you.
Now, which subject do you want to tackle first?” The tutor asks.
“Economics is the one I am struggling with the most. How are you on
that subject?” The tutor just laughs at the question. “I guess you are an
ace on that subject, I feel almost stupid asking.”
“No, I admit my main strengths are history and math, however, I did
pretty well in economics. I just realized we’ve been talking the last few
moments and I haven’t introduced myself. My name is Alicia Salgado and
I believe we are going to become very good friends.” Alicia states with a
smile on her face.
